Chapter 8

His honesty overwhelmed her. She clutched him as hard as he held her. He was safe with her and she understood. They both wanted a reprieve from the horrors of everyday reality. His pain put so much of life in perspective. Yes, she’d found Richard cheating, but his infidelity had only exposed what she already knew to be true. He was not her soul mate. She’d never felt the gut wrenching pain this man experienced when he lost his wife.

She’d been humiliated by Richard’s actions, but only in relation to what others would think, people like her father, her mother, the florist. She realized in an instant that her betrayal was nothing compared to Derek’s loss. Slowly, the weight began to lift from her shoulder. “Thank-you. Thank-you for sharing that with me.” She sprinkled kisses on his face. “I can’t imagine what it must have felt like. But you’re so lucky, so lucky to have had each other. I can only imagine. To be loved by you—” She couldn’t stop touching him. Had she said too much?

Derek pulled out of her arms. He gazed into her eyes and she was lost. He crushed her mouth to his. Ava was overwhelmed by his passion and need. His tongue smoothly entered her mouth. The taste—addictive. Ava’s eyes drifted shut.

“I want you. Now. No more talking,”

“Yes, please.” She wasn’t going anywhere. This was the night she’d been dreaming about since spotting him on the balcony. She couldn’t understand how safe she felt in his arms.

Slowly, they lay back on the bed. Derek’s mouth drifted down her neck, hot, open-mouthed kisses that made Ava shiver in anticipation. When Derek pulled back, she opened her eyes in protest.

He stood up and quickly stripped the shirt from his shoulders. Her breath caught in her throat.

“You are so beautiful,” she said in total awe. She loved his smooth, tan skin. Broad shoulders tapered down into long graceful arms. And his stomach was glorious. It was toned and flat but not too overdone. She could tell he was an athlete, but not a fanatic who lived in the gym.

Thank God—that would have been too intimidating.

“You’re the beautiful one.” Slowly he reached for his pants. Oh, my God, he was going the full-monty.

Bring it on baby.

“Could you hurry it up please, I’m getting cold.” Time to lighten the mood. She wanted to banish the shadows that still lingered in his eyes. If he didn’t kiss her soon, she might start to overthink the whole thing and change her mind.

“Hmm, a demanding woman. One who knows what she likes. I can appreciate that. But I rush for no one,” he said in a long drawl.

Oh really? We’ll see about that. It was time to take control of the situation. Slow and sexy was fine for the second go round. Right now she needed mind-numbingly raw sex. She sat up on her knees, taking special care to keep eye contact with Derek at all times.

She placed her hands on the bottom of her dress and whisked it over her head.
